Camp Courageous remembers Dennison Tabor

Camp Courageous’ sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Dennison Tabor of Baldwin, Iowa. Dennison, and his wife Barbara, and their entire family have been very supportive of camp in a variety of ways for many years. Dennison’s granddaughter, Jessica Tabor, was a super counselor at camp.

This past Fall Jessica married camp counselor, Tobi Luekemeier, from Germany. Their wedding took place at camp. It was a great opportunity to get to know the family better. Dennison’s son, Dave Tabor, had the place in tears as he sang Sunrise, Sunset from Fidler on the Roof. It was a wonderful celebration for their family and friends. Dennison and Barbara raised a beautiful family….and Dennison’s personality and legacy will live on through them for many generation to come.

Dennison’s memorials were directed to Camp Courageous. Get more details here.

Camp Courageous remembers Janice Kraus

Camp was saddened to hear of the passing of Janice Kraus. Janice’s family was key to her happy life. How fortunate she was to have raised such a wonderful family!

Janice  taught everyone that the greatest joys that come in life are not boughten, but are given from the heart. Her labors of love are now the family treasurers. What a beautiful life and what a great legacy she leaves behind…. Our sympathy goes out to Victor and family.

Long-time Camp Courageous supporter Ina Pewett remembered

Ina Pewett has died. Ina and I go back to about 1974 when I moved out of the U of I dorm and into a room in the home of Margaret Crum. Margaret’s husband, George, use to run the soda fountain at Whetstones…for some of you older Iowa City folks. Margaret had a stroke within a short time of me moving in, and so my $50/month rent was waved in return for caring for Margaret from about 5PM-8AM M-F and weekends… one of the reasons I never look back at my college days as too exciting.

Ina Pewett worked 40-hours a caring for Margaret when I was at school. I lasted a year, then went to ambulance/funeral home work. Ina always kept in touch with me and dropped me notes. Then when I came to camp, she started supporting the camp and didn’t miss a breakfast. She became close to Leo Greco, and has always been a character. Several years ago she said she had the camp in her will. Her memorials go to CC.

Gudenkauf selects Camp Courageous as she starts a new journey

Congratulations to Sue Gudenkauf (center) who recently took the Consecration as a Virgin Living in the World. The ceremony took place in Madison WI by the Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison. Those wishing to honor Sue, were encouraged to make a donation to Camp Courageous. Sue (surrounded by her wonderful folks Gene & Anita of Cascade) was one of camp’s most exceptional counselor/assistant respite care directors. She was extremely good with campers and had a real heart for her work. She started volunteering while in high school, and volunteered for many years. We wish Sue the best.
